Panasonic is introducing a SMD push-button switch, claimed to be the thinnest of its kind at 0.55mm.
Called ‘Light Touch Switch‘, it occupies a 2.6 x 1.6mm footprint and is IP67 water and dust proof suiting it to outdoor as well as indoor use. IP67 rating comes from laser-welding the cover and base.
Operating force is 1.6 or 2.4N, depending on version, and with clear tactile feedback, said the firm.
“In the past, the operability and tactile feedback of switches deteriorated as they were made thinner due to restrictions associated with their contact structure design,” said Panasonic e-mech product manager Yoichi Nakagawa. “However, Panasonic’s Light Touch Switch achieves excellent operability and tactile feedback by utilizing a unique movable contact design technology, precision processing technology, and press working technology.”
Dc resistive load operation is 10μA 2V to 20mA 15V, with 500mΩ max contact resistance. It is rated for 500,000 cycles minimum, and use over -40 to +85°C.
Applications are foreseen in: wearables (watches and wristbands), hearing (headphones and hearing aids) and portable medical devices.
“The use of hearable devices such as hearing aids is expected to increase, driven by aging societies as well as increased numbers of wearable devices due to growing numbers of IoT-enabled products,” said the firm, proposing the push-button for on/off switching and volume control.
Mass production starts this month.
