Osaki CoolGen fired up a demo plant in March which, says CEO Kenji Aiso, “is 30% more efficient in power generation than the most advanced coal-fired power generation plant in Japan and reduces the generation of CO2 by 30%”.
CoolGen’s plant roasts coal at over 1,300 C while blowing oxygen over it to create gas.
CO2 creation is reduced because the system uses gas from the roasted coal to generate power instead of burning the rock.
Despite the rise in renewables and the the emergence of fracking, coal-fired electricity generation is on the rise.
