The US Navy’s electromagnetic rail-gun is out of the laboratory and ready for field demonstrations at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren, Virginia.
Rail guns, which until now have been research tools, are a form of linear motor which accelerate objects to very high velocity using a combination of magnetic and electric fields.
Testing is planned to be at 20MJ by the end of the summer and at 32MJ next year.
Exit velocity is expected to exceed Mach 6, and range over 100 nautical miles.
US Navy rail-gun“Rail-guns and other directed-energy weapons are the future of maritime superiority,” said ONR’s Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Department Dr Thomas Beutner. “The U.S. Navy must be the first to field this leap-ahead technology and maintain the advantage over our adversaries.”
Projectiles rely in kinetic energy rather than explosives to cause damage. In this case s will be a guided projectile.
