An Enigma cryptography machine has been bought in a Romanian street market for €100 and later sold at a Bucharest auction for €45,000.
This was an early version Enigma with three rotors. A four rotor Enigma was sold at Christies in June for $547,000.
And a rare U-boat Enigma was sold in 2015 for $395,000
Enigma machines were distributed in Romania by Germany when Romania was on Germany’s side in WWII. Later it switched to the allies.
It is assumed there may be other machines undiscovered in the country.
