The 2017 semiconductor market will stop a whisker short of $400 billion, says the WSTS (World Semiconductor Trade Statistics), but will break through that barrier for the first time next year.
According to the WSTS, the semiconductor market will grow 17% to $397 billion in 2017.
Memory will grow 50%.
In 2018, WSTS is forecasting a 4.3% rise to $414 billion.
The market first hit $100 billion in 1994 and then took six years to reach $200 billion in 2000. It then took 13 years to first reach $300 billion in 2013.
So, if it does reach $400 billion next year it will only have taken five years to add the next $100 billion.
Last year the market grew 1.1% to $338.9 billion – an all-time high.
