China will deploy 14nm technology next year, says Ye Tianchun, director of the Institute of Microelectronics at the Chinese Academy of Science (pictured).
However Ye did not say where the process or processes would be installed.
China imported chips worth $227 billion last year and exported chips worth $61.4 billion. The deficit is due mainly to China’s lack of leading edge processes, said Ye.
Ye says that the West has blocked the flow of technology into China, forcing China to develop its own, by setting up the National IC Industry Investment Fund (Big Fund) with an $18.03 billion investment.
IC technology is the “crucial cornerstone” of the modern era, said Ye. He said that China’s industrial IC chain would be on a par with the best in the world by 2030.
