Following Apple’s lead in putting cellular in a watch, the wearables market should continue to grow, says IDC.
“We expect the most innovation and development in the wearables market to take place on the wrist,” says IDC’s Ramon Llamas.
The Apple Series 3 watch announced on Tuesday has 4G cellular connectivity built in.
The inclusion of cellular in smartwatches will be a major factor fuelling wearables growth, along with improved sensors and algorithms.
IDC reckons that 121.7 million wearable devices will be shipped this year, marking a 16.6% increase from the 104.4 million units shipped in 2016.
The wearables market is forecast to maintain this pace of growth with shipments reaching 229.5 million units in 2021, resulting in a five-year CAGR of 17.2%.
