A two year-old start-up cellphone company aiming to challenge Apple and Samsung has raised $330 million in venture funding.
Essential Products, founded by one of the Android OS developers, Andy Rubin, says it has signed up retailers Best Buy and Amazon and will have its $699 phone in shops for the Christmas sales season.
Investors include Access Technology Ventures, Tencent Holdings, Foxconn, Amazon.com, Redpoint Ventures and Playground Global.
The titanium and ceramic phone will have an edge-to-edge screen and a detachable 360deg camera.
Rubin says Essential will follow the following principles:
“Devices are your personal property. We won’t force you to have anything on them you don’t want to have.
We will always play well with others. Closed ecosystems are divisive and outdated.
Premium materials and true craftsmanship shouldn’t be just for the few.
Devices shouldn’t become outdated every year. They should evolve with you.
Technology should assist you so that you can get on with enjoying your life.
Simple is always better.”
