MediaTek integrates Here positioning tech into its chips

MediaTek has teamed up with Here to integrate the positioning specialist’s technology into chipsets designed for the IoT.
The Taiwanese fabless semiconductor group is integrating Here’s positioning technology in its ARM-based MT 2503 chipset that contains Bluetooth, multiple GNSS receivers and an integrated 2G modem.
One of the first implementations is from 3G Electronics, a China-based IoT customer of MediaTek, which recently introduced a children’s smartwatch series called KidsWatch, which is powered by MediaTek chipsets featuring HERE’s Network Positioning solution in products sold outside China.
YuChuan Yang, deputy general manager of MediaTek’s internet of things business unit, said: “Network positioning is a crucial component of the connected experience and Here’s database improves positioning accuracy significantly.”
Here is owned by a group of car manufacturers including Audi, BMW and Daimler as well as Intel, produces technology that determines a device’s location based on mobile network and Wi-Fi signals.
News of the collaboration came as BMW announced that its annual profits had been boosted by Intel’s investment earlier in the year in Here, when it said it would buy 15% of the business.
