AI M&A activity increasing

AI has become an area of intense M&A activity with big companies like Google, IBM, Yahoo, Intel, Apple, Samsung, GE, Ford and Salesforce buying start-ups.
Over 250 private companies using AI algorithms in different industries have been acquired since 2012, with 37 acquisitions taking place in Q1 2017, says CB Insights.
Google is the most active acquirer of AI startups, with 12 acquisitions since 2012 including deep learning and neural network startup DNNresearch for image research, DeepMind Technologies, visual search startup Moodstock, and bot platform Api.ai and Halli Labs of India.
Apple is second with 8 acquisitions including Lattice Data and RealFace.
Intel, Microsoft, and Facebook are tied for third place. Intel acquired three AImstart-ups last year: Itseez, Nervana Systems, and Movidius.
Facebook acquired Belarus-based Masquerade Technologies and Switzerland-based Zurich Eye recently.
Microsoft recently acquired Genee and conversational AI startup Maluuba.
Salesforce and Twitter have acquired four AI start-ups each.
Twitter’s most recent M&A deal was image-processing startup Magic Pony.
Salesforce, which joined the race in 2015 with the acquisition of Tempo AI, made two major acquisitions last year: MetaMind and open-source machine-learning server PredictionIO.
GE has made two acquisitions:.AI-IoT startup Bit Stew Systems, and CRM-focused Wise.io.
