Hynix is looking to acquire Toshiba’s memory business, says a study from the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) as reported by the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper.

Hynix is part of the INCJ/Bain consortium bidding for Toshiba, but it has always said it was only looking to provide finance. However it did transpire that the company was hoping to structure its funding as debt convertible into equity which gave a steer as to its intentions.
According to the report: “SK Hynix, which only has a 10.1% market share (in NAND), is hoping to take a larger slice of the global market by acquiring Japan’s Toshiba, which has the second-largest global market share after Samsung, with 19.6%.” Samsung has a 35.4% market share in NAND.

The KIET report forecasts that Korea’s share of the semiconductor market will increase from 16.5% today to 18.2% in 2025.
Already Samsung and Hynix jointly command a 73% share of the DRAM market.
The KIET study forecasts that semiconductors will be a growth area for Korea along with machinery and defence equipment, but expects a decline for other Korean industries such as cars, consumer electronics, mobile phones, textiles, petrochemicals and ships.
