As suspected, Amazon’s Alexa device is a way for remote listeners to eavesdrop on conversations.
The security company MWR has found a way to instal malware on an Alexa to turn it into a wiretapping device.
“On the base of the Amazon Echo there are 18 pads you can easily access used for debugging the device,” says Mark Barnes of MWR, “if you attach an SD card to certain parts you’re able to reboot the system without it showing you, which gives you access to the device and let’s you basically do anything you want.”
As well as is discovering someone’s Amazon account ID it could be used to listen to all the conversations going on in the vicinity of the device.
