Rolls-Royce has designed an electric engine for a flying taxi and is looking for partners to develop an airframe and the electrical systems for a commercial product.
The engine uses ‘gas turbine technology to generate electricity to power six electric propulsors specially designed to have a low noise profile’ says Rolls.
The VTOL machine could carry four people for 500 miles at up to 250mph.
As it is charged by a gas turbine, the Rolls engine doesn’t need external charging.
Rolls is the latest is a series of initiatives to develop flying taxis: e.g. Ehang of China, Airbus, Mercedes/Bosch, Uber, Google’s Kitty Hawk and BlackFly among others.
