We are looking for partners to build a new fighter jet called Tempest (pictured) to replace the Typhoon.
“I want to announce the publication of the UK’s combat air strategy, which confirms our commitment to maintaining our world-class air power capabilities,” said Theresa May at the Farnborough Air Show yesterday.
$2 billion has been budgeted to develop Tempest until 2025, said defence secretary Gavin Williamson. It is scheduled to enter service in 2035.
“Our approach hinges on international collaboration,” said Williamson, “my question to potential partners is simple, how can you work with us, how can we work with you?”
Likely partners are said to be Japan, Sweden, Korea, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
Tempest will be developed and built by Bae, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo of Italy and MBDA the missile manufacturer.
