Sondrel has claimed the crown of Europe’s biggest digital chip design consultancy after it completed its acquisition of SoC design business IMGWorks from Imagination Technologies.

The acquisition of IMGWorks – which was announced three weeks ago  – has added Polish and Indian offices to Sondrel’s international network, while its UK teams are now located in three design centres in Reading, Kings Langley and Bristol.

IMGWorks is to be rebranded as Sondrel SoC Solutions and will provide system on chip design and software development for OEMs and fabless semiconductor companies in the US, Asia and EMEA.

Sondrel chief executive Graham Curren (pictured) said: “An enhanced UK engineering presence and scope, coupled with a larger network of global design centres, enables us to deliver both technical depth and engineering scale to our international customer base.”

In a statement this morning, the company said that the addition of the SoC Solutions division will expand Sondrel’s services beyond its core IC design services business, which already covers design, verification, DfT and physical implementation engineering.

It said the new business unit would draw on its existing scale and customer base; while its focus on image processing and GPU applications position it well in growing markets such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), artificial intelligence, machine vision and machine learning.

The sale of IMGWorks has been part of a major overhaul at Imagination Technologies following news that Apple would stop using its GPU technologies within the next two years. It has also put its MIPS and Ensigma units up for sale. No financial details have been made public on the IMGWorks acquisition.
