Wafer suppliers, for years the unprofitable Cinderellas of the semiconductor industry, are having a field day with rising ASPs delivering fat margins.
Sumco’s operating margin grew 6.4% sequentially and 11.9% y-o-y to 25.3%.
Together, Shin-Etsu and Sumco have over 50% market share .
GlobalWafers, the No.3 supplier, had a Q1 operating margin of 28.2%.
Wafer supply, particularly for 8- and 12-inch, will remain tight for two years, says Digitimes Research.
