Toshiba has announced 3D XL-Flash – a fast to read SLC flash type with 10x reduction in read latency compared to TLC flash.
Compared to QLC’s 30μs program time, XL-Flash has a 7μs program time,
Toshiba sees it as providing fast cache when used in conjunction with QLC flash.
The combination is faster than a DRAM-HDD combination, says Toshiba.
The speed is obtained by reducing the distance of internal connections.
XL-Flash will deliver cheaper SSDs than Intel’s 3D X-point-based Optane at roughly equivalent performance, claims Toshiba.
It also competes with Samsung’s Z-NAND.
Toshiba intends to produce MLC versions later.
