Next year Intel will offer its Thunderbolt interface technology as a royalty-free licence.
The move is designed to get the manufacturers of peripheral devices to use Thunderbolt.
Intel will put the port on its processors and Microsoft will support the interface on Windows PCs.
Thunderbolt was originally planned as a photonics interface but, when copper delivered 10Gbit/sec cheaper than photonics could, it was decided to stick with copper.
