London to Edinburgh in under an hour is the vision proffered by Hyperloop One, which is one of several companies looking to commercialise the evacuated tube transportation concept.
If Hyperloop is deemed practical, HS2 would look redundant.
Hyperloop One is looking at two other UK routes – Liverpool to Glasgow and Cardiff to Glasgow.
The London to Edinburgh route offers a 14 minute trip from London to Birmingham, another 12 minute trip from Birmingham to Manchester, and then a 24 minute haul from Manchester to Edinburgh, taking 50 minutes to do the whole 414 mile London to Edinburgh trip.
Under the Hyperloop proposal passenger pods will travel through the evacuated tubes at 700 mph.
Hyperloop One has constructed a 500 metre test track in the Nevada desert (pictured).
Other European routes proposed for Hyperloop are: Corsica-Sardinia, 280 miles; Estonia-Finland, 56 miles; Spain-Morocco, 391 miles, a 1236 mile track in Germany, a 266 mile track in Holland and a 415 mile track in Poland.
While the evacuated tube concept has been talked about, and occasionally demonstrated, over the last 150 years, it has recently been revived by Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO.
