Qualcomm’s LTE baseband share slips 13%

The LTE baseband market grew 36% last year in a total cellular baseband market which grew 5.5% with all non-LTE segments declining sharply, says Strategy Analytics.
Qualcomm had a 52% share of the LTE baseband market measured by unit volume which was a drop from 65% in 2015 because of Apple choosing Intel modems for part of its iPhone output. Despite that Qualcomm’s 2016 modem shipments grew 8% y-o-y.
Qualcomm was first to a G-bit class LTE baseband.
Mediatek doubled its LTE baseband shipments and Intel quadrupled its shipments thanks to the Apple design win with Intel holding a higher share of iPhone 7 and 7S slots than Qualcomm. HiSilicon, Spreadtrum and Samsung also had strong LTE baseband growth.
In the overall baseband market covering all technology generations, Qualcomm had 50% market share measured by revenues, followed by MediaTek with 24%, Samsung with 10% and all others sharing 16%.
