TSMC has persuaded Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology to sponsor a four year, $33 million ‘Semiconductor Moonshot Project’ to encourage university professors to get students into researching AI Edge-based semiconductor technology, reports Digitimes.
Chen Liang-gee, Taiwan’s Minister of Science and Technology, said that the project will focus on process technology and systems knowledge for AI technology used in terminals.
The AI needed for edge AI chips needs low power ICs which is what the project will be working on.
Chen instanced Korea which is following a similar strategy to support Samsung.
In case it was felt that the project was a recruiting scheme for the Taiwan chip industry, Chen emphasised that students involved in the project could work wherever they wished upon graduation.
