China is five years away from overtaking the USA in AI says a report today from the US Center for New American Security (CNAS).
“China is no longer in a position of technological inferiority relative to the United States but rather has become a true peer that may have the capability to overtake the United States in AI,” says the report.
At a CNAS conference, Google chairman Eric Schmidt , said: “I‘m assuming that our lead will continue over the next five years, and that China will catch up extremely quickly. So, in five years we’ll kind of be at the same level, possibly.”
Schmidt pointed out that China announced a national AI plan last July which aspires to make China No.1 in AI. He said that people were wrong to think that China’s educational and political system cannot produce the kind of people who can make this happen.
US legislators are moving to tighten rules on foreign investment in US companies to stop China acquiring AI expertise by acquisition.
